Decks

Every deck starts blank and ends up telling the whole story of how you skate.

The deck is where personality lives — the graphic you flash on every kickflip and the platform every trick starts from. From core brands like Element, Baker, Santa Cruz, Powell and Girl to honest blank decks and the grip tape that finishes them off, here's how to pick the plank.

How to Choose

Most street decks are 7-ply North American maple; the differences that matter are width (7.75"–8.5", chosen by foot size and terrain) and, a distant second, concave. Buy a named brand for consistent pop and a graphic you'll actually skate, or grab a blank deck if you're on a budget and set to shred it anyway. Whatever you choose, add a sheet of quality grip tape and a bag of hardware — a bare deck isn't rideable on its own.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

What width skateboard deck is best?
Width is chosen by foot size and terrain, not height. 7.75"–8.0" suits technical street and average feet; 8.25"–8.5" gives more stability for transition, ramps and larger shoes. When in doubt, 8.0" is the modern all-rounder.
Are blank skateboard decks any good?
Yes — most blanks come from the same maple presses as branded boards, so they ride fine and cost less. You lose the graphic and the brand's quality control, but for a beginner or a heavy skater who chews through decks, they're smart value.
How long does a skateboard deck last?
Anywhere from a couple of weeks for a hard-skating street skater to many months for a casual cruiser. Watch for waterlogging, lost pop, razor-tail and cracks near the trucks — those are the signs it's time for a fresh deck.
