Protective Gear

Concrete always wins the argument. Pad up and skate it anyway.

Concrete never loses. A helmet, wrist guards and a set of pads are the cheapest insurance in skating — mandatory for kids and bowl skaters, smart for everyone learning something new. Here's the protective kit worth wearing, for grommets and grown-ups alike.

How to Choose

Start with a certified helmet — the one piece of gear that's non-negotiable, especially for kids and transition skating. Add wrist guards (the most-broken bone in skating is the wrist), plus knee and elbow pads for bowls, ramps and learning slams. Buy a matched pad set for the best value, size it snug so it stays put, and don't skimp — a $30 helmet beats an ER visit every time.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

Do I really need a skateboard helmet?
For transition, bowls, and any skater still learning, yes — a certified helmet is the single most important piece of safety gear. It's legally required for kids in many US areas and simply smart everywhere else.
What protective gear do beginners need?
At minimum a certified helmet and wrist guards, since wrists take the brunt of most falls. Knee and elbow pads add crucial protection for ramps and bowls. Matched sets are the easiest, cheapest way to cover all of it.
How should skate pads fit?
Snug enough that they don't slide out of position mid-fall, but not so tight they cut circulation. Straps should hold the pad centered over the joint. Sizing charts vary by brand, so measure and check before buying.
